Good morning the honorable juries also ladies and gentlemen.
First, let me introduce myself. My name is ______ and I come from _____. And I’d like to say thanks to God who always blesses us and also for giving us chance to gather in this great occasion.
After that, I’d like to say thanks to the judges and committee for giving me time to deliver my speech here, in this _________ competition. And today, I’m going talk about a very interesting topic, the cigarette advertisement.You might ask me what’s interesting on that, and I’ll tell you that this one thing has been a big pros and cons among us. Some people said that cigarette advertisement is not good, it should be banned because this could be something dangerous for our young generation and so on. Then the rest said that it’s okay and it can just go on and people from old to young can freely see it on tv.
But I’m here to tell you what’s on my mind and for me, we shouldn’t ban cigarette advertisement. At least there’s two reasons why we shouldn’t ban cigarette advertisement. . .
First, ban the cigarette advertisement is a useless action if the point is to minimize the amount of smoking people in this nation, especially our young generation. Why? Because they don’t smoke just because they watch the advertisement. It’s a complex connection between habit of people around them, maybe friends or even parents and thing that most influence them to go smoking is the easiness to do it.
Now we can see that almost every level of people, from young to old, from poor to rich, they can easily get the cigarette. It is sold in a low price and everybody can buy it. There’s no limit and monitoring action in the sale of cigarette.
If you want to get them not to smoke, give them education. Give them understanding that smoking is not good for their health. In Singapore, the packaging of cigarette shows pictures of people and their part of body that is suffer for many diseases because of the cigarette. I think it’s a good action because if you want to take a cigarette then you see the picture of a man with a cancer on throat, blood is everywhere and seems that he couldn’t even talk and it’d be hard to breathe for him, what will you do? You will think twice to go smoke, right?
Other way that might help is by increase the price of the cigarette. In foreign country like Singapore, Malaysia and United Kingdom, the price of the cigarette is very expensive. The price is so high so you can spend it to eat until you’re fully loaded instead of spend it on a pack cigarette. This strategic is a good way to minimize the amount of smoking people because it’s not easy for them to get the cigarette.
Second reason is that cigarette advertisement never (or I can say, almost never) shows the figure of the cigarette itself. They usually show a pack of interesting story that has no connection to the cigarette instead of show the figure of a man smoking cigarette. You can check it on tv, and you’ll find out that there’s almost no cigarette advertisement that show any cigarette on it.
And instead of showing a scene that contain figure of the cigarette, it always shows us the caution that explain the bad impact of smoking. In Indonesia, it’s usually written, “Merokok dapat menyebabkan …”. We also can see it in every package of the cigarette. I think that it’s a good action in order to spread the world that smoking is not good, although the effectiveness of it is doubtful. But we can see, that the factory produce cigarette is concern to this. They show their responsibility by that action.
Honorable judges and the audience, from all I’ve explained I can draw a conclusion that we shouldn’t ban the cigarette advertisement. Ban cigarette advertisement won’t be a good idea because it won’t help to minimize the amount of smoking people. Get rid of the advertisement doesn’t mean vanishing the distribution of the cigarette itself and sure, it won’t help you to warn the people about the dangerous of smoking. If you want to minimize the amount of smoking people, go tell them. Tell them by the education, the understanding or even the picture of the disease they may have if they keep smoking. And the easiest way is by increase the price of the cigarette. If people is hard to get the cigarette, so it could help them to release from the addiction, right?
This responsibility of it is in our hands. Start from the little thing like tell your friends or your father the danger of the cigarette. Persuade them to stop smoking. Tell someone who smoke in public area not to do that. And if you are able to and have power, push the factory to make little change in the package of their product, give it some funny picture that shows us the impact we might get if we keep smoking.
